We always knew that we had the best and most enthusiastic supporters at The Eve Appeal. You’ve already decided to support the too-little known and underfunded gynaecological cancers; you’re 100% committed to raising awareness of ovarian cancer and making sure more people know about its signs and symptoms. But this March, you’ve surpassed yourselves and baked 1.5 tonnes of cake and drunk 14,000 cups of tea for us!
That really does show incredible dedication to the life-saving challenge of getting women and men talking about ovarian cancer which affects far too many mothers, daughters, wives, sisters and friends in the UK each year.
Research commissioned by The Eve Appeal showed that 60% of women feel most comfortable talking about gynaecological issues at home over a cup of tea – so there is a very serious side to Making Time for Tea – which is why we’re so grateful that over half a million people shared our information online via twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Shares and likes don’t save lives, but our medical research does and that’s what your awareness raising and fundraising is supporting. So thank you.
A host of fabulous celebrities got behind the campaign by naming their dream tea party guests. We loved Eamonn Holmes choice of top chatter Ray Winstone and found Ray’s guest of choice even more entertaining as it was Eamonn himself – on account of his champion eating skills. It was also pretty fantastic that two brilliant actresses, Dame Judi Dench and Joanna Lumley both wanted to share tea and cake with none other than William Shakespeare! Who else would do for such acting royalty?!
The top tweet from a celebrity came from Sarah Millican who wanted to share a cuppa with Adele. Her tweet was shared many times over and prompted a fabulous online discussion amongst our supporters about who they would most like to share tea with.
The money that you’ve raised is now coming in. We know that just over 5,000 people have joined in a tea party. That’s such great news and means that so many more people know the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer and the importance of talking openly about this brutal disease.
We have a brilliant science team, a cutting edge research programme and a tireless staff team. But the critical ingredient in making progress really is our supporters – that’s you.
